Journalism 417: Magazine and Magazine Editing
The
Magazine Editing course is an exciting hands-on class that transforms
a group of about 20 journalism students into a magazine staff for
a semester. The students work diligently to produce a high-quality
magazine called Curb, from start to finish, that is
distributed throughout Wisconsin and that actually competes with others
in the professional market. Emulating a real newsroom, each student
has a specific staff position in the areas of business, Web, design
and editorial. Staffers work closely with one another to meet demanding
deadlines and in the process learn about the interconnectedness of
every aspect of magazine production - including the best techniques
in print layout, what it takes to develop an editorial philosophy
for a target market, how to design a sophisticated Web site, the best
ways to sell advertising and create a Public Relations plan and much,
much more.
