You’ve chosen to stay in Madison! Since you’ve been here for four years and seen the college side of things, let’s look for a different angle now that you’re more mature and cultured. But before we get to that, you’ll need to find somewhere to live; that old grungy second-floor flat on Mifflin St. won’t do for someone your age. You want to upgrade, but you still want to be downtown. Luckily, you’ve got two really great options. You can live in one of the new condominium high-rise buildings on the Capitol square, or you can live on the “politically correct” East Side on Jennifer Street. Recent grad Anne Lupardus recently faced just such a decision. After landing her dream job at the Capitol as a press assistant, she looked around Madison for housing. “Luckily I still had my lease for the summer, but it took me so long to find somewhere, and it was hard because all my friends were moving away.”
The high-rises on the square are brand new, close to shopping, dining, the University and the businesses on the square. While these units might be a little pricey, you’ll get views of the lakes and the Capitol as well as all the amenities of a brand new home of your own. Read more information.
The quaint old houses on Madison’s East side have a certain charm about them. They’re very affordable. You can get a lot more bang for your buck over here than you ever did near campus. Many of the houses even have lakefront lots and they’re close to the Willy Street Co-op, Madison’s own natural foods grocery store. Visit their website. Molly Webb, a recent grad, moved just off Jenny Street after she also found a job in Madison. “I really like the atmosphere over here. It’s like living in different city. It still has the Madison feel, but it’s much calmer.” See a photo.
For the same price you can rent your own a one-bedroom condo on the Square, or own a two-bedroom house on with a waterfront lot on Lake Monona.
