How to Make a Wisconsin Old Fashioned

by

By: Daniel Niepow

Dan Niepow visits The Vintage Bar and Grill in Madison to share the recipe of a Wisconsin classic: the old fashioned.

When Wisconsinites are in the mood for a cocktail, an Old Fashioned usually hits the spot. The basic elements of the drink remain the same—sugar, water and bitters—but they’ll swap the standard whisky or gin for brandy. Blend in a muddled orange and cherry, and this classic is complete. Brad, a friendly bartender at Vintage Bar in downtown Madison, gives us a more detailed run-down of the recipe.

Daniel Niepow: Hey folks, this is Dan with Curb Magazine. We are at Vintage in downtown Madison, and today we’re going to learn how to make a Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet—a Wisconsin classic.

Brad (bartender): First thing you do: You add an orange and a cherry. Pour some sugar over it. Since it’s gonna be a sweet, you add a little bit more sugar. Then you need your bitters. Usually do about three squirts for a sweet, and about five for a sour. Then what you do is your take your muddler, and kinda muddle it all together. You add your ice. Brandy. And your Sierra Mist. Stirring straws—mix it up. Now you have your Brandy Old Fashioned
