Smoky’s Club

Smoky’s Club has been a staple in Madison since the 1950s. It has been rated the best in Madison for as long as the city has been keeping track. Their matchbooks proudly proclaim them “Voted #1 in the Midwest” which begs the questions, by whom? Where? And when? But when it comes down to it, Madison doesn’t disagree. Smoky’s has a diverse menu, but go for the cooked-to-order steaks, ranging from the size of your fist to the size of your head. They come with home-style hash browns and a teeny tiny glass of fresh tomato juice on ice. The glitsy-cum-kitschy décor will take you back in time more than 20 years, and the staff always greets you like family. Long-time owner Larry “Smoky” Schmock was a beloved member of the Madison community until he passed away in the spring of 2003. His son Tom Schmock describes Smoky’s Club as the “last of a dying breed of Wisconsin supper clubs.” He says, “Smoky’s has evolved over the years into a place to go on a special occasion. Our menu is traditional with everything done really well, using family recipies and traditional values.” Visit their website for a better idea of what Smoky’s is all about.
